Hello all! My name is Ellie. And although my “official title” at the moment is student (I am studying international affairs and am pre-physician assisant), food/cooking/baking is a huge passion of mine and it is something that I have enjoyed since childhood. I believe that food is something to be savored and enjoyed…not something that needs to be calorie-counted and fretted over.
As a runner, being healthy is a top priority of mine. But chicken breast, plain oatmeal, and protein powder is not a diet I’ll ever be found eating (diet as in repertoire of foods). As much as the no-fat, low-carb craze has taken over the United States, I have found that the foods labeled as “unhealthy” are typically the best. Now I’m not talking about eating a donut every morning for breakfast; but why banish crusty bread, 1% milk, and chocolate when it’s not those actual foods causing damage…it’s the quantity that some people eat them in. I’m all about quality over quantity these days
Happy eating
Very cute blog! How many weeks prior to your half marathon did you start training? I’m thinking about tackling one as my next goal. Did you do one of those training schedules that you can find online?
Hi! Thanks so much!
I usually do a 12-16 week training plan. I’m a huge fan of Hal Higdon and the Runner’s World training plan creator. Then I just tailor those plans to fit myself. It takes some trial and error but when you find the right training plan it feel like everything falls into place.
Good luck!
Hey Ellie! (I love your name by the way)
Some day, I aspire to work for Runner’s World, or either work my way up to being a race director for a marathon.
My name is Kate, and I stumbled upon your blog, either from Jenna’s or Kath’s blog, or maybe Tina’s….hhmm….oh well. What I really wanted to tell you was that your blog is awesome! I am only 15 and live in South Carolina, but am mature beyond my years. You could say I’ve “been through a lot”. I’ll just give you a quick jist. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with anorexia, went to inpatient treatment facility 6 hours from my home for a month, came back, and a week later, my father committed suicide. You could say I haven’t had the typical teenage life. Then, this past August, I went to an all girl’s boarding school in North Carolina, hated it, and came back home in December. Through all of this, I found RUNNING.
Running is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my whole life. My day doesn’t feel complete unless I’ve run. And it is AWESOME therapy. I am also not too bad of a runner and love when I place in my age group in races
Anyways….your blog is one of the few blogs where I feel like you REALLY are a runner. And I get AWESOME food ideas from all of your meals. So please, keep up the GREAT work!!!
Hi Kate!
I’m sorry that it’s taken me so long to respond but reading your comment really struck me. I too “matured early” because of ED issues and various other things and running has really been a helpful constant for me as well.
But thank you so much for the wonderful compliments and good luck with everything!
Hey! I think you have an awesome blog. I am also a runner and I am training for my first half marathon. I am a few weeks in and still going strong. I also really like food; I think it just comes with running because I eat about 2500-3000 calories a day. I used to have some eating issues, and I think running actually helped me through it. I realized if I want to run my best, I need to eat like a champ! Good luck with your running!
Hi Matt!
I also think that running has helped me through some of my eating issues as well. It’s hard to ignore that much hunger/need to fuel. But it’s nice to hear such a healthy perspective on food…that doesn’t happen very often, even with runners.
And good luck with your half training!
Ellie, I am in a similar situation as you. Overeating, undereating…. I am struggling to find a balance and have started to keep a food journal to help me along the way. I can be eating healthy for a week or so without trying (I love veggies, fruits, whole grains etc.) but then all of the sudden I just eat like I hog! (pig whatever) and really don’t know why! The more I eat the hungrier I get…. I don’t even know how the food fits in my stomach. I am pretty healthy looking so people probably wouldn’t think I have a problem either. A response would be appreciated, I feel kind of lonely about this.
Hi Monica,
If you feel like you’re eating well for a week and then find yourself “eating like a hog”, maybe you’re not eating enough when you feel like you’re eating well. That what really eggs the binging on for me: not eating enough throughout the day. Maybe you could try adding some more food to your meals and see if that helps at all?
Thanks for the suggestion! I do eat pretty balanced meals about 2000 kcals a day but will check that better. Keep up the good work, your blog is great!! I am trilingual too
Being able to talk to people in different languages is one of the things I love in life!! Have a nice weekend!
Nice site keep up the good work!
I love your blog! I am a first generation Greek as well and definitely have gone exactly what you have! Argghh its soo frustrating b/c I just love love food. I just signed up for a race and am not a runner. Any tips for a beginner like me?
How do you track your calories?
Ellie,
I love your blog! I admire you for being so open and honest about all your food issues. I can identify a lot with a lot of the things you’ve said, and it’s so nice to know someone else’s thoughts on similar issues that I’ve been dealing with for years. I too have been trying to make healthy eating (and healthy living) a priority- that’s why I started my own food blog, and I’m really enjoying it. I’m definetely adding you to my “favorite blogs” list and will be following your meals. Keep up the great work!
Foodie9, Have you tried the Couch 2 5k training plan? I’ve heard great reviews of that and it seems to be a nice balance way to start running.
As for calories, I don’t really count them. I estimate in my head about how much I’m eating but it’s not a completely accurate count.
Ellie,
Keep up the good work…and most importantly, your yoga practice! Thanks for sharing yourself and spreading the joy of Yoga.
