Saturday!

I’m baaaack. I admit that I fully intended to post yesterday but I was rarely home and I completely forgot to grab my camera on my way out the door…so pictures and posting didn’t happen. But it’s the thought that counts 😉

I’m enjoying a nice slow Saturday because I am excruciatingly burned out. I woke up at 8:00, flipped on the TV, and watched Nigella Express while enjoying a new oatmeal concoction: 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/2 cup skim milk, 1 tbsp. wheat germ, and 2 tbsp. chopped walnuts. I was worried that it wouldn’t be sweet enough and I’d have to add in some honey or sugar, but it tasted delightful on its own. I’m sure that has something to do with the fact that I love, love, love walnuts and anything to do with walnuts. I also had a small mug of mango-peach V8 splash; I’m not a huge fan of it and it kinda looks radioactive to me but I bought it a while ago and I need to finish it up before the end of the semester.

An oatmeal kind of morning

Although I really dislike rain and grey-ness in general, there’s just something about gloomy weather that makes oatmeal so incredibly enjoyable. I made myself some banana-wheat germ oatmeal this morning, which is something that I haven’t had in quite a food days because of my wacky schedule and lack of bananas to make it with. It feels good to be back to normal…despite the fact that I’ve been having to use quick oats rather than old fashioned rolled oats. When I noticed my grocery store snafu I was pretty frustrated with myself but it turns out that quick oats are not that unbearable. They become much thicker and “oatmeal-like” about them when they’re cooked in the microwave. So, not all is lost 🙂

Now I’m off to workout and do some homework.

Pre-lab

I have chem lab bright and early on Tuesday mornings so I always have to make sure to eat a good breakfast because I never know when I’ll be done; some mornings the labs take us barely any time at all and some mornings the labs take up the entire lab slot. I’m hoping that today’s lab will be on the easy side. We’re doing a lab called “The heat of reaction” and it’s all about calorimetry…not my favorite thermochemistry topic by any means. Hopefully it’ll help me understand the concept better. So since I don’t know when I’ll be able to eat next, I “beefed up” my oatmeal this morning by adding some extra fruit. Instead of just a banana, I sliced up some strawberries as well. The oatmeal wasn’t exactly like I expected it to be because I accidently bought quick oats at my last trip to the store and I’m not about to waste an entire cannister of oats just because they’re not exactly what I wanted. It was still a tasty breakfast, however…just much thicker than the regular old fashioned oats.

Insomniac oatmeal

I got very little sleep last night (as in 3 1/2 hours of unrestful sleep…caused by sleeping in yesterday morning and the tiny amount of caffeine that I thought would sit well since it did the night before). But sometimes sitting in bed with absolutely no hint that sleep will come soon can be a good thing; I always come up with my best concoctions when I’m lying in bed and unable to sleep for some reason. Last night’s idea was a complete and total winner. I think it may just may be my best yet. I was sitting there thinking about how I shouldn’t have had the hazelnut Belgian coffee that late and about how my strawberries were going bad really quickly for some reason…and a new oatmeal baby was born: Strawberry-Hazelnut Oatmeal. So simple yet sooooo delish; it’s just 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup skim milk, 1/4 cup water, 2 1/2 tsp. hazelnut Belgian coffee powder, and 4 medium sized strawberries all sliced up. It was like a party in my mouth!

Also, good news on the workout front and the reason for such a late breakfast post: I went on the elliptical machine for 30 minutes with a negligible amount of knee pain. It’s a miracle! I think I’m going to stick with the elliptical for this week (despite the fact that I really don’t like it. Actually, I hate it and it makes me want to gouge my eyes out) because I don’t want to start running and get all excited that I’m virtually pain-free and end up irritating the nasty little bugger (a tiny, miniscule piece of tissue) again. Maybe if I bring a magazine with me the elliptical will seem a little less like a hamster wheel. But really, it was great to just be able to do some “cardio” (yeah, I don’t like this word. It’s quite cringe-worthy. It makes me feel like a gym rat, which I am most defintiely not).

Anywho, it’s going to be a long day for me so lunch will be posted rather late. But I have some good food planned for today so stay tuned (I may just be making “it” for dinner tonight 😉 ).

Up and at ’em

I have been extremely lazy this morning; I slept a bit later than I usually do on the weekends and I feel like my entire schedule is thrown off. But I guess that’s what weekends are for…not having to worry about a schedule, that is. I’m just thankful that today is “oatmeal weather” because I was really craving some when I finally did climb out of bed. There’s just something about oatmeal and a chilly morning that go so perfectly; I’m worried about what I’m going to eat when it finally starts to warm up for the season because oatmeal is such a go-to for me.

I had my usual this morning: banana-wheat germ oatmeal. I also had a huge mug of Constant Comment tea for some caffeine. I usually try to stay away from lots of caffeine ingestion but, really, I knew that if I wanted to get anything done this morning I would need something to wake me up a little more.

Time for homework…woohoo?

(Also, a semi-yay for UNC. I don’t know how happy I am about them doing super well this season but since Tennessee is out I need to cheer for someone…)

As I mentioned yesterday, this is going to be another homework filled weekend. The homeworking has already started…I’ve been working on chemistry since climbing out of bed this morning. Thankfully I find electron configuration somewhat interesting and much more bearable than thermochemistry. But since I have a chem exam on Wednesday I am going to spending a majority of the next few days studying my brains out.

I was in a very non-oatmeal mood this morning; I think I was dehydrated because I really really wanted some nice juicy fruit and I wasn’t really all that hungry. So I had a banana, an apple with pumpkin pie spice, a kiwi, and a bunch of grapes. It definitely hit the spot, if I do say so myself.

I also snacked on a chocolate-coffee Jocolat bar. So far my favorite is the mint-chocolate variety but, in my non-discriminating opinion, they all kick butt.

Now it’s back to working on atomic structure problems. They can be so incredibly tedious (hence my need for a break!). I have a trip to the grocery store and some yoga planned for later on today just so I can get out and away from the thinking.

Oh bananas.

I am SO glad that it is Friday. I’m going to have another homework filled weekend ( 😦 ) but doing homework all day while sitting in my pajamas isn’t quite as bad as having to worry about doing homework all day and then getting to class on time. I just needed to remember that the end of the semester is super close so everything is going to start getting extremely busy, whether I like it or not. So I can either go with the flow and do all the work without thinking much of it or I can make all the work more painful it has to be. Me thinks I’m going to go with the flow.

It was back to my traditional banana-wheat germ oatmeal this morning…I just couldn’t stay away. And I definitely have confirmed that letting the oatmeal soak in milk for a couple minutes ups the creaminess of the oatmeal. For a few times I thought it was a fluke but now I know it’s not. No more dry oats for me! But I have to admit, the pear tasted a lot better in the oatmeal than I perceived it to; it just took some immediate comparison from the banana in the oatmeal to realize that. It’s a different taste, much sweeter (and well, pear-like), but still good. Sadly I’m almost out of oatmeal and fruit so I really need to restock this weekend.

Also, and I know this is random, but I signed up for a 1.5 hour “cooking class” put on by my school’s adventure department; it’s called Backwoods Cooking and is designed to help the student improve their camp cooking skills. I signed up for it mostly because I have an insane cooking bug at the moment, but also because my dad and I go camping a lot during the summer and, when we do attempt to cook, the food is lousy. Plus it was free and we get a free dinner out of it (always amazing for a student!). So it sounds like this class will be useful in more ways than one!

Also, RIP Vols. Ya’ll tried 😦
